Internet Explorer takes 1-2 mins to load up and will not work anymore

Hi all
recently, big problems have started with my notebook. I am using XP, and connect to the internet via AOL 8. I think something dodgy has been loaded onto my sytem (perhaps the registry??) The computer has become almost unusuable. All the microsoft apps, like explorer, even recycle bin, windows explorer take 1-2 mins to load up. I cannot use IE 6 anymore and even AOL is unusable. I type in a web address and it hangs !!

I've installed Nortin Anit-virus, and this hasn't helped. What can i do to avoid a full wipe of my system? Can anyone help

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
