internet explorer sporadicaly crashes in certain accounts after SP

After I installed SP2, internet explorer will work for unspecified periods of
time in my wife's account but then will lock up. You can close it at this
point but you are unable to reopen it. Computer is not froze. I keep task
manager open to monitor cpu load and it is normal. I have checked everything
listed in the process tab of task manager and nothing out of the ordinary is
running. However, iexplore.exe is still listed but you cannot access
it. In fact, if you keep trying to open internet explorer a new instance of
iexplore.exe appears as it should but the actual application does not open. I
have tried ending task on any and all instances of it but the only way to get
it to open is to log off and log back on. Also, at the point of logging
off it takes a long time and THEN internet explorer tries to open every page
that wouldn't open in the first place. The various screens flash by as you
are logging off. I have run several different virus scans, checked AdAware
and Spy-bot but nothing weird shows up. This is the only problem I'm
having post SP2.
The strange part is internet explorer works at first then locks up and it
works all the time on my account. Both mine and my wife's account have the
same settings in internet explorer. I am running XP home. I have tried to
run my wife's account as limited and administrator but the same thing happens
irregardless. I have turned off the new firewall because I have a third
party one installed. I have tried the new firewall with and with out my
original and vice-versa but the same thing occurs. What could I be
overlooking ???

Hi Kelly.
I too was thinking about restarting the shell. The next time this happens,
I'll try it and post back with the results.

Hi,

Not the answer, but a suggestion. When this happens, go to Task Manager and
end process on Explorer.exe, then go to File/New Task Run and type in
explorer.exe or run the edit on line 319:

Let us know how that goes and good luck!

Open Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions (tab), under programs and
services, check to see if Internet Explorer and Outlook Express has been
added as blocked programs.
