Internet Explorer Question

Saved links often have a custom icon when first saved to My Favorites. After a few weeks they change to a generic lowercase 'e' with the standard blue background. What causes this to happen and how can I restore the custom icon?

I've noticed that the links with the custom icons are 230 bytes while the generic are 120 bytes, so I suspect the custom icon is inside the link when it's first saved. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Don R

Hi Don,

Preserve the favicons using AM-Deadlink:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/favicon.htm

To do this manually:
Download the .ico file:
Visit that site and create a shortcut of it to the Desktop
Right-click the URL shortcut, and Send To > Notepad
Look at the line reading IconFile:
Example:
IconFile=http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico
Now, type http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico in the browser window and
save the .ico file locally.
Change the URL icon using the "Change Icon" in it's Properties sheet.

Note: View > Source can also be used to view the favicon URL.

Ramesh,
Thanks for the link to AM-Deadlink. It restored all my Favicons and helped me find some dead links. This is the best little freeware utility I've seen for several years. Thanks again for helping out a fellow Windows user.

Do you think you could set Outlook Express so that it wraps lines at 73
characters? The norm in Usenet posting is somewhere between 73 & 76
characters.

Thanks.

I've reset my send options from Quoted Printable to Text and set the length to 73 characters. I liked the way posts sent as quoted printable would reflow when the window size was changed. If it looks better set to text , warp at 73 characters, so be it. If you are still having trouble reading my posts, let me know.

This is a second try with some corrections - I should be more careful. Anyway, the plain text setting is now MIME with no encoding with line wrap at 72. I sent this one to my own address and it looked like a lines were wrapped at 72. As before, if you are still seeing a problem, let me know.

Third try is a charm. Found another setting for News. I had been
changing the Email settings. This should do the trick. If the lines of
this post are not wrapped at 72 then there's another setting I've missed.

I installed Deadlink and ran it several times. Every time it runs, trying
to check the favorites list, it hangs near the bottom of the list. I
deleted a lot of favorites, especially those at the bottom, but it still
hangs. It causes a problem within IE that totally disables it and the only
way to access the internet again is to do a startover. I finally gave up
and uninstalled Deadlink. Any body else had this problem?

Don,

No problems found here.

Can you tell more about this problem? What happens when you open IE and
browse the web.

On the web site where you found Deadlink, there's a place to leave email
to the author. Looks like they would interested in the problem you're
having.

Don,
The Deadlink program takes quite a while to run. If you have a
very long list Deadlink may appear to hang. Look at the bottom of the
program for the number of bookmarks checked and the number of
connections. When the number of connections goes from 20 to 1 there is
still a period where bookmarks are being checked. I had 220 links and
it took a few minutes to check them all.
Try selecting 10 bookmarks near the end of the list and run the
check on those just to be sure they are not causing the problem.

Deadlink starts out normally, checking the sites in the list and marking
them OK, or site not found as I would expect. I watch the activity on the
icon for the Direcway link and it is normal - constantly on for both send
and receive.

After it gets near the bottom of the list, the activity lights go out and it
hangs, checking several sites. If I leave it alone, it eventually posts a
message that indicates that the link is no longer there. I forget what the
exact message is, but at this time, there is no activity on the link.

I exit Deadlink, and open IE. It doesn't do anything! There is "NO"
activity. There is no request sent out to the DNS server, no activity
light, and eventually I get the message about no DNS connection. Again, I
forget the exact message.

Somehow, it has affected IE, and this I don't understand. Starting IE I
would expect a request be sent to Direcway, but there is no light on the
icon at all. Any time of normal operation, I can watch the activity lights
and determine what is going on, but there is nothing. I have to restart
Windows to get IE back to working.

I'll reinstall Deadlink and try that. I have deleted most of the entries
near the bottom and it still hangs though. I have saved a copy of Favorites
and can import them again if necessary, so I'm not concerned about deleting
a favorite or so.

Well, it looks like I got it to run. I 'think' that the culprit was Real
Player Homepage. I had deleted several other links and was trying about 10
links at a time. I deleted Real Player and ran 10 links and it completed.
I ran another 10 links and that completed. I then ran everything else and
it finally completed them all. When I get some more time, I will re-insert
Real Player and try it again. I don't understand why it didn't work, since
I cal select it and am directed to the site.

I will do a little more experimenting and then advise Deadlink of any
problems that I find. Thanks to all for their comments and suggestions.
