Internet Explorer 7 hides custom icon file path in shortcuts can't
copy paste it anymore
Pretty sure that the installation of Internet Explorer 7 hides custom
icon file path in shortcuts in many places on my system. Because of
that can't copy paste it anymore.
E.G. if I have assigned a custom icon to a shortcut on my system and
I want to copy paste the path of that icon into another shortcut I
many create I can't do it anymore because Right Click / Properties /
Change Icon will show %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll even though
the icon I have assigned to that shortcut is a stand alone .ico file
and not in SHELL32.dll.
I now have to 'remember' what I named the icon file and go into my
C:\icons\ folder hierarchy where I keep all my custom icons and hunt
the file down by name.
This problem only used to exist for Folder Icons, e.g. right click on
a folder you have customized the icon for / properties / customize /
change icon and Windows would never show you that path to the icon you
had previously assigned for that folder. You could however create a
shortcut the folder and look at ITS icon, or simply edit desktop.ini
inside the folder.
Now the problem goes for shortcuts too, at least many of them on my
system.
Possible exception seems to be the task bar.
Of my many custom icons, some of the ones I use the most are assigned
to shortcuts on Internet Explorer's Links Tool Bar. It used to be
quick to right click on the shortcut in the links toolbar to grab the
path to the custom icon for a new shortcut I created elsewhere on my
system. Not any more.
All I get is %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
