internet explorer performs illegal operation

everytime I try to log on with my internet explorer it
takes me 6 or 7 tries I keep getting this alert

This program has performed an illegal operation and will
shut down OK

Then another box comes up says" An error has occured in
internet explorer internet explorer will now close. If you
continue to have problems restart your computer. I have
done that for days it doesn't help.

I had a similar problem, which showed up after I upgraded with Windows
Update last summer. I finally narrowed it down to Popup Stopper Pro from
panicware.com. I have removed Popup Stopper Pro and now use the new version
of Google Toolbar, which includes a pretty good popup stopper. I think what
happened is that they had a coding error somewhere and one of the bug fixes
in Windows caught it, causing the toolbar to abend. Unfortunately, it took
down Internet Explorer with it. The best place I found for looking up the
causes of Windows crashes is www.bugtoaster.com.
