Internet Explorer not shutting down in Task Manager

When I open Internet Explorer, naturally there is a
iexplore.exe in the task manager. When I close Internet
Explorer the iexplore.exe does not shut down, and this
can be seen in the task manager.
AFter opening Internet Explorer many times, I will have
many iexplore.exe tasks running, and taking up my memory.
What is causing this bug, and how can I get rid of it?
I'm using IE 6.

It applies to Internet Explorer, not specific to OS. The directions indicated in Mike Burgess' site helps to eliminate malware and prevent it from installing again.
