Internet Explorer freezes when a Favorite is launched

My O/S is Windows XP Media Edition 2002 and I automatically download updates
and because they seem genuine updates, I install them manually.

Somewhere after March 11, 2007, an update that was installed that causes
Explorer to freeze when I launch a "favorite" from my list.

I have determined that it is a Microsoft update, because I did a full PC
Recovery, including a reformat of my HDD, loaded all the HP updates and
checked that Explorer worked as expected (and it did).

I then ran the Microsoft updates - all 67 - and now my laptop freezes until
I click on the task bar.

Anyone know which update NOT to load - or how to undo the update so I don't
spend hours rebuilding my laptop?

Was IE7 one of the updates you installed? Why would a WinXP machine need 67
updates all at once? Was SP2 one of them?

If you use PC Recover AND you are set up for autoload, you get 67 updates for
a "Green" install...

Sorry, I overlooked the above. Can you tell me why you did a Wipe & Reload?
What medium did you use to reinstall Windows (e.g., OEM CD that came with
the machine; hidden Recovery partition)?

Does the above mean you have Automatic Updates enabled and configured to
automatically download but not install updates?

Hi PA Bear!!

HP's WONDERFUL PC Support (that's meant to be sarcastic) said that I'd need
to do destructive restore (from the Restore partition).

I did second rebuild, taking Restore points after each update (did them 10
at a time as there were 67 Microsoft updates that applied to a 'raw' machine).

Didn't use the IE& update but I believe found the culprits!!!

Norton Password Manager and MSXML 4.0 don't like to co-habitate in Windows
XP Media Edition (my old Omnibook with XP Pro is working OK with both).

I'm going to re-install MSXML 4.0 in a short while and see what happens (I
can live without Norton Password Manager - no big deal).

Thanks for "riding shotgun" with me on this issue.

Ditch all Norton apps, IMHO.

Why you say that Papa Bear??

I have the same feeling about McAfee!!

What would your recommendation be?
This is the first issue I've had with Norton in 20 years (except when they
wouldn't pay my rebate..) and I have reported the problem.

Thanks again for following up.

Norton and McAfee both screw up any version of Windows released this
century. Try NOD32 or, if you want a free one, Avast or AVG.
