internet explorer doesn't work

A few weeks ago, my IE 6.0 stopped responding. this tiny 1
by 1 inch box pops up titled "error" with no explanation.
then it closes by itself. i tried to uninstall it, and
reinstall it, but it wont let me. i am now currently using
Mozilla as an alternative browser. I'm using Windows Xp Pro
as an OS. How do I get my IE to start working again?

This is probably being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)
