Cannot close Internet Explorer

I am running Internet Explorer 6.0 with Windows 2000 and
Office XP Professional. I cannot close Internet Explorer
6.0. None of the Close options work including the Exit
button.
When I go to Task Manager to stop the Internet Explorer
Task, it responds with a message that Internet Explorer is
not responding.
Additionally, the Delete key and the Tab key do not work
within the IE window.
Any explanations or fixes?

A friend is experiencing the very same problems and asked me to help.
So far I haven't been able to find any answers, but hopefully, someone here
will help.
In the meantime, reboots seem to help sometimes, but not always.
