Internet Explorer constant modem dial up

Hi,

Is this problem an Internet Explorer thing?

A friend has WIN 98 SE
Pentium 3 processor.
191 MB RAM
Norton 2003 internet protection (firewall & AV)
56 k modem (not broadband)
He is with Tiscal internet.
He uses Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook email client.

Whenever he boots up his system a dialog bog appears saying do you want
to connect to the internet

There are 3 buttons, from memory I think they are;
CONNECT, CANCEL, WORK OFF-LINE.

I think this is part of Internet Explorer connection stuff.
His email address and password (stared out of course) are also shown.

If he clicks WORK OFF-LINE or CANCEL the box is immediately replace
with
another copy of the box .

You have to click 15 times or so before it goes away, then only for a
while, it
comes back again at regular intervals.

If you go into INTERNET EXPLORER'S TOOLS Menu and select
INTERNET OPTIONS | CONNECTIONS TAB

the always dial my default connection is checked.

Is this the correct option?

Is there any way to stop it asking and only ask when he wants to go
online?

Thanks

oops!!

For starters:

IE > Tools > Internet Properties > Connections

Select "Never dial a connection" > Apply > OK

Check Control Panel > LiveUpdate and you may also need to check in the NIS/NAV settings: disable autoupdate.

Is the dialog box related to IE or not possible to identify?

Are you running updated spyware/malware scanners?

Try these:

Download Spy Sweeper fully functional trial version:
http://www.webroot.com/downloads/?WRSID=5b56b845bf373998de626a632b241140
Install, UPDATE and run.
You may need to reboot and run twice.

Download Ad-Aware SE from here:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Install, UPDATE and run.
You may need to reboot and run again to clean all the nasties that cannot be deleted at once ("in use").

Also excellent is SpyBot Search & Destroy available here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
Install, UPDATE and run.
You may need to reboot and run again to clean all the nasties that cannot be deleted at once ("in use").
You should also apply the "immunize" function, since it blocks roughly 1900 known 'bad' runs/apis/apps.

Even if Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D are similar, they do clean different things. You should have both of them and use REGULARLY.

You can also install "preventive" software that will help you control these nasties:

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Avoids malicious Active X installs.
Advantage: no system resources used!!!
Currently protects against 3350+ items.
Just download, install and UPDATE.

All of them extremely useful but you must keep them UPDATED.

Post back if you need further advice.

Thanks for the advice.

If I select never dial a connection how will IE connect to the
Internet?

At the moment when IE open the dialogue box prompts to make a
connection.

Thanks

You have to connect first (dial out) and surf after.

That will avoid any unwanted use of dialup.

Thanks for that but how would I dial up, his software doesn't have an
icon for dialling up.

Could I create an icon from the control panel applet that has the modem
stuff in it?

broadband is so much simpler.

Thanks for all the advice, I have downloaded the spywear software.

thanks

To access the dial up connection try this:

My Computer > Dial-up Networking

In this folder you will see "Make New Connection" that allows you to create
a new connection.

You will see also the connections already created. Double click it and
you're on your way.

You can of course create a desktop shortcut right clicking and select create
shortcut.

Well I set the short cut up and set IE6 to never dial and so far so
good.

Not one problem when shutting down.

Time will tell though,

Thanks for the link to the web page it was very useful.

Thanks.
