internet explorer connection problem

Anyone who can help with this would be appreciated greatly.
I get the common error message with internet explorer that
the page cannot be displayed. I have a cable modem through
Earthlink and Time Warner Cable and when
I go into tools >internet options >connections > lan
settings and uncheck use a proxy server, internet explorer
works and I can access the web, but... in a few seconds IE
just shuts down. When I reopen it, the "use a proxy server"
option is checked again. Any idea how to fix this?
Many thanks!

Some issues.

You Cannot Save Web Proxy Setting in I. E. on Some Windows-Based Clients
Settings that you configure for Web Proxy in Internet Explorer may not be
saved. When you restart the workstation, the newly saved configuration
reverts back to the default settings.

I. E. Does Not Retry Bad Proxy Server for 30 Minutes
After the initial failure, you cannot browse for up to 30 minutes. This may
occur although you have re-established a connection to your proxy server.
