"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I have been getting a lot of "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage" messages lately, along with pages not loading correctly or
completely, especially pictures, and I can't seem to figure out what
the problem is. I'm running now in no add-ons mode, which seems to be
helping, but I'm still having this problem. It's also occuring with
Firefox. I tried disabling my firewalls, but that didn't help, and the
Network Diagnostics for Windows XP tool is not shedding any light. Can
anyone point me to what might be the problem or a way to find out?

Computer is a Dell Inspiron with Windows XP SP2 and IE7. I connect to
Verizon DSL through a wireless router.

Thanks,
Robert

First thing I would test is connecting the computer directly to the DSL modem without the router to see if that changes anything. If the problem goes away, then the router settings need to be investigated.

Ok, it seemed to work correctly on both my computers when they were
connected directly to the modem.

The problem now appears to be fixed after changing my router's settings
from "use static IP address" (that was set to
[blank].undefined.undefined.undefined) to "Get Dynamically From ISP."
Could this have been the problem, or is it just by chance that when i
changed that it started working? I only noticed that becuause I was
changing my network to WPA encryption from WEP, but i don't suppose
that would have anything to do with it.

Check your router MTU settings,do a little googling for info.

Glad to hear you have it working now. Hard to tell what the specific problem was after the fact, but my guess is it had to do with the DNS server configuration. All Internet access is done with I.P. addresses. When you type a URL in the browser address bar, behind the scenes a request is sent to a DNS server to find out what the I.P. is, and that I.P. is actually what is used. Without a DNS server, the results are what you were seeing, Server not found. When you use a dynamic I.P. address, what should happen is that the DNS server information is set upon connection to the Internet access provider. Normally 2 DNS servers are configured for fail over in case the first one goes down. When you connect through a router, the router is supposed to pass that information on to the connected computer(s). So, if it was DNS, it could have been on either side -- the router not getting the DNS server information or not passing it on to the LAN computers.

If you have the problem again, try just restarting the router which may be enough to clear up the problem. Beyond that, help with problems for a specific router are really beyond the scope of this newsgroup, but the forums at www.dslreports.com can be very useful for that, in fact just browsing those is often enough to find a solution.

IE7 questions should be asked in the Internet Explorer newsgroup. There are
quite a few posts there so peruse them for something on topic before posting
a new message.

I recently had the same problem. I narrowed it down to Adobe Reader/Adobe
Acrobat, programs that have been growing exponentially over the last few
years and always seem to have more updates to install.

I now run FoxIt Reader in place the Adobe pdf junk and I no longer have IE 7
connection problems.

Thanks for the information. I knew the Adobe programs were getting huge but
didn't know FoxIt existed. I'm already downloading it and will see how it
responds.
