internet explorer browser closes

internet explorer closes when i click a link that opens
up in a new window. i want the new window to open up as
its own window but i want the original window to not
close. is there a setting i can change or something to
fix this.

So, when you click on a link that is supposed to open up
in a new window -- DOES IT? Or does IE simply shut down
altogether?

the new window opens up and the old one closes. if i
were to click the internet explorer icon to open up a
window when i already had one opened, it closes teh first
one, and opens the new one.
