Internet explorer and McAfee security centre

R

Ritchie

I am having problems with my internet explorer and McAfee security centre.
When i try to open IE8 it will open up for a second and then disappear from
the screen and wont open. I have re-installed it and it worked once and after
I closed the window and then came back to open it again, i had no joy once
more.
My security centre window will open up but it has no content where all the
buttons and menu items should be...
Last but not least, i have my MSN messenger that msgs everyone on my contact
list all the time asking them to follow a random link.
These are the only problems i have discovered so far.
Any suggestions for a fix are greatly appreciated.(known viruses or such
programs that do this kind of thing???)
Cheers, Adam

Many have.
When i try to open IE8 it will open up for a second and then disappear from

IE8 is still a beta version; I'd uninstall and revert back to IE7.

1.Removal instructions for Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta are found in...
Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 Release Notes:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949787

2.Read this before installing IE7:
Sandi's Installation Tips: 1 thru 8, 10 and 11, note 12 that's it.
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

Do not use Automatic/Windows Update for downloading/installing IE7!

Use this link instead:
Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Save the program to your desktop then install.

Activate Windows Update after installing IE7 to download/install pertinent
updates offered, including Root Certificates updates.

3.Clean HDD
Click Start==>Run... then type (or copy/paste) "cleanmgr" (w/out quotation
marks into the box, then click the 'OK' button. Select your drive
(presumably WinXP (C:) and click OK.

4.Download/execute:
Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe
--and--
Kaspersky® AVPTool
http://avptool.virusinfo.info/en/
Direct:

Dr.Web CureIt!® Utility - FREE
http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/
--and--
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

NOTE:
Kaspersky® Virus Removal Tool, Dr.Web CureIt!® and the free version of
Malwarebytes© and SuperAntispyware are not capable for real-time protection
of your computer.
Kaspersky® AVPTool, Dr.Web CureIt!® have no update feature (so they don't
turn into full blown scanners). As soon as your computer is cleaned you are
supposed to remove these tools from your operating system.
Re: K/AVPTool; To uninstall/move this program 'enable self-defense' must be
unchecked!

The free version of Malwarebytes© and SuperAntispyware have an update
feature, keep them installed in addtion to your resident AV/A-S
applications and scan frequently.

After the software is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in Safe
Mode.
How do you boot to Safe Mode?
By pressing/tabbing F8 (or F5 on some keyboards) during re-boot.

Alternatively:
Click Start==>Run... then type (or copy/paste) "msconfig" (without
quotation marks), click OK. Then click onto BOOT.INI tab and 'check'
/SAFEBOOT then OK and click Restart. To go back to Normal Mode, you must
access the System Configuration utility again and click the General tab
then click/check the radio button 'Normal Startup'- load all device drivers
and services'.

6.Routinely practice Safe-Hex.

7.Consider removing McAfee and replace with good-quality freeware
applications.

Good luck :)

I am having problems with my internet explorer and McAfee security centre.

In my view, Norton is the worst security software available, and McAfee is
only slightly better. You're using the second worst product available.

When i try to open IE8 it will open up for a second and then disappear
from
the screen and wont open.

Let me make it clear that you are *not* trying to open IE8, because IE8
doesn't exist yet. What you are trying to open is a beta version of IE8.

Beta software, by definition, is software with problems. If the problems
were all gone, its beta condition would end, and it would be released.

In my view, it's a very serious mistake to run beta software unless you
enjoy playing with such problems, and unless you install it on a spare
non-critical computer. Otherwise problems are to be expected; you're playing
with fire, and looking for trouble.

Hi Adam,

What you are doing is fine. However, I would dual-boot your computer
using the same operating system on two different partitions. This way you
can have one operating system for beta-testing and one for normal use.

Internet Explorer 8 is still in Beta and will have bugs preventing some
programs from opening up, correctly.

What you describe, is currently what happens in my Beta operating
system. I am leaving it alone and just report the bugs.

The question is, it is a problem with Internet Explorer or with McAfee,
where it relies on Internet Explorer to display its Security Center.

I would say the problem laids with McAfee for taking shortcuts or that
is moving all its products in the Security Center, in order for the consumer
to make changes to the Software.

Thanks for your response , although pedantic responses like that are not helpful to anyone. Please refrain in the future...
