Internet Explorer 7 Does Not Allow Printing

T

The Cat's Meow

Okay, I just confirmed that my problem with printing a web page is Microsoft
Explorer 7 under Vista Windows.
You would think that since Microsoft owns Explorer 7 and Vista, that they
would have been able to work together.
Boy, what a mess.

I just used Mozilla Firefox and I can print a web page with no problem.

So, my question is, how do we get Explorer 7 fixed by Microsoft????

My printer is an HP Photosmart 8250 and prints all applications and prints
Mozilla Firefox websites. So my conclusion is that it is not my printer.

Any ideas???

Cari \(MS-MVP\)

Did you check the HP website for the updated drivers, in particular, the
updated HP Director software... it's this application that is at fault.

T

The Cat's Meow

Yes I did, but the Director Software is not listed for my HP Photosmart
8250. It is listed for a Multi Task printer that does Fax, Scan, Copy. Mine
is a stand alone printer. That is why I did not download it. Also in a Chat
with HP they never mentioned the Director Software for my problem.

I have VISTA Ultimate, MSIE7 and the HP Photosmart 8250 printer and have
no problems printing webpages.

Could you repeat exactly what your problem is?

I am not using the driver that is in VISTA out-of-the-box but:

SF_CDD_Full_Non-Network_enu.exe 1/1 (67.39M)

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?
os=2093&softwareitem=ps-48177-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=443024&lang=en

so if you are not then I'd suggest uninstalling any HP Software you have
installed for the printer, deleting any printer icons in Printing &
Faxing, unplugging the USB cable from the PC and rebooting.

Then still without plugging in the USB cable, install that Fully Featured
software. Do not plug the USB cable to the printer in until you are told
to by the installation routine or until you get to [Finish] or VISTA will
fight with you to install its driver.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Installation Instructions (on the HP website

Click the Download only button.
Note: Make sure the printer is "Not" connected to the computer before
running the download file.

Click the Run button to begin the download.
Note: File is compressed and may take time to expand and run.

Follow the on-screen software installation instructions.

Click Finish.

Click This program installed correctly.
Connect the USB cable between the printer and the computer, then turn on
the printer.

You may see messaging lower right corner of the screen indicating your
product is being installed.

Your product should be ready to print.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you checked out the Readme file that is installed? I suggest you do.
There is some useful information on errors in documentation and where
certain functions are actually located! I better print it out <g>

Is the PS8250 your only printer? Make sure you have a printer set as
default:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To make the HP Photosmart the default printer (Windows Vista)

On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Printers.
Right-click the HP Photosmart icon, and then click Set as default
printer.
Hope that helps -- please let us know how you get on.

T

The Cat's Meow

If what you say is true, then how come it works for Mozilla Firefox?
As I said before, when I bring up a web page that I want to print, I either
use print preview or print. Neither works.
It does not get to the print queue, it just disappears and the printer icon
in taskbar shows that I executed the printer, except it has 0 documents. The
icon does not include the 8250 because there is nothing in the queue.

I forgot to answer this in my previous reply.
You asked if I could repeat exactly what my is problem is.
Well here it is:

I have Vista Windows installed.
Printer HP Photosmart 8250
This printer prints from all my applications, it works perfectly.
This printer prints web pages when I am using Mozilla Firefox.
This printer does not print web pages when I am using Internet Explorer 7.

Here is what happens:

1. Select Print or Print Preview on File Command to print an article on a
web page using Internet Explorer 7
2. Printer window pops up.
3. Select Print.
4. Printer icon appears temporarily in the Taskbar.
5. It says Open all Active Printers
6. It says Open the Printer Folder
7. It says 0 Documents
8. The 8250 does not appear because nothing went to the queue.
9. It then disappears.
10. Nothing can print because there is nothing in the queue.

When I use Mozilla Firefox, this does not happen. I can print any web page
using this same printer.

Everyone says I should download an update for my printer.
I did update the update available for this printer and it was for Vista.
There are no more updates available.
If I did not have the correct updates, then how come Mozilla Firefox works?

They tell me to make sure administrator is selected and that I have
privileges.
I checked, I do have privileges.
Again, if I did not have privileges, how does Mozilla Firefox work?

I know nothing about Firefox -- I've never used it. All I can tell you
is that my system does print from IE7 including using the Print Preview
facility and that I have installed the HP software I referred to.

This does not include the Director Software that Cari referrs to but
does install HP Product Assistant and HP Solution Center.

You might have a look at the Properties of the PS8250 under Printers /
Advanced Tab and see what the settings are there for spooling even if
the settings on that Tab are grayed out. I don't know why that is on my
machine but one of the troubleshooting is to turn off the Spooler and
see if the systeme then prints OK, even if more slowly.

The only other thing I can suggest is to reinstall the printer software
invoking Run as Administrator on the file from which you install since
I have adopted the habit of doing this and as I say -- the sytem works
for me.

You might also have a look at this VISTA support page:

Troubleshoot printer problems

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/8c11977e-8244-408f
-a036-7978a618d7a21033.mspx#ECB

The second item tells how to change or restart the Spooler Service.

PS You aren't using VISTA 64-bit are you?

T

The Cat's Meow

No I am not using 64. Thank for all your input. I will try what you said and
let you know if it works.
Thank you

T

The Cat's Meow

Okay, I uninstalled printer and drivers.
Downloaded full install from HP website.
The one that includes Vista.
I installed it
Reconnected my usb and power when told to.
Every thing installed correctly.
I still can print from Mozilla Firefox.
I still cannot print from Internet Explorer.
I checked Properties Advanced and tried all different ways, print right
away, etc.
Nothing worked.
I give up.
I will have to use Mozilla Firefox if I need to print a web page.

The following still happens:

Here is what happens:

1. Select Print or Print Preview on File Command to print an article on a
web page using Internet Explorer 7
2. Printer window pops up.
3. Select Print.
4. Printer icon appears temporarily in the Taskbar.

I wish I could come up with a solution for you but when it doesn't
happen that way for me I can't think what it can be.

How uptodate is your MSIE? MS keeps issuing bug and security fixes --
maybe one of those has gone wrong?

Internet Options / Advanced TAB has a reset button -- it won't do any
harm to try that. Open HELP in MSIE and search on Repair then look at
Repair Internet Explorer for some details.

Is there a newsgroup here for Interent Explorer? If so ask there.

If not check out the Compuserve Internet Explorer Forum:

http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=ws-iesupport

Good luck -- and if you solve it do let us know!

T

The Cat's Meow

Internet Explorer 7, that's a laugh.
I did post this problem on the Internet Explorer newsgroup, and guess what?
Someone forwarded it to this newsgroup and said that's where it belongs.
So much for help from them.
I will let you know if it ever gets fixed.
What I hate most about Microsoft is that they never back or support their
products without a charge.
We should all revolt. This is not what a control company should do. It is so
frustrating.

From the above links, it might be a IE7 protected mode problem, as Firefox
doesn't use protected mode.
You might try turning it off in IE7.
Tools - Internet Options - security
uncheck Enable Protected Mode
ok
close & reopen IE7

I don't use IE7 much (prefer Firefox), but IE does print to my HP 6110 ok in
protected mode.

Annoying -- Try the Compuserve Forum I gave you. You don't have to be a

something like that.

I definitly feel your pain. I have exactly the same problem with my HP
DeskJet 5650 printer. I can't print in IE 7 with protected mode on.
The only driver available for my printer is the one included on the Vista
disk and my printer does not use the HP Director.
HP customer service tells me it is an IE 7 bug, and the MS reps on this
forum have been laying it on HP. Looks like us users are coming up losers.

I have the exact same problem it can be 'worked around' by running IE as an
Administrator. It will then print OK. But it is a total BF I agree. I wish
between them someone from MS and HP would sort out this mess - I am gonna be
dumping one or the other for browsing pretty soon.

Dave and Ron
Thank you

Finally an answer.

I turned off Protected Mode and now I can print from E7.

Problem is you have to put up with the pop screen telling you that it is
turned off, but I can live with that because the only time I am going to use
E7 from now on, is when I have no choice, which is when I go to a website
via Windows Mail. It defaults to E7.
That is really the only time I would have a problem, I can leave Protected
Mode off.

You are right, Firefox is the best.
The best thing about Firefox, is that if the system crashes, which it does a
lot, it asks if you want to return to the website you were on. It also knows
that you crashed.

E7 is way behind the times.
All E7 does is say there was a problem, let us check for a solution, but it
never comes back with one.

T

Tony Zamboni

When trying to print from IE7 the printer icon shows in the task bar but it
shows 0 documents pending and nothing prints. It appears the file is not
being spooled to the printer. I can print in all Office programs but not in
IE7. By turning off the Protected Mode in IE7 I am able to print but that is
not a suitable solution.

If you search the web for IE7 print problems you will find that there are
many and quite a few recently. The common thread I see is people questioning
the source of the problem and trying to determine the fault seem to point to
a similar set of circumstances. One of the requirements to install AVG 8
Free on a Vista system is first installing Microsoft’s KB929547 hotfix for
windows filtering platform. I have recently updated AVG 7.5 to 8.0 on 2
separate machines and experienced the same IE7 printing problem with both.
Two of my friends also did the same with the same results. I have 2 more
machines with similar requirements and I am going to test IE7 after the
KB929547 install and before installing AVG 8 to see if the printing problem
is caused by the MS KB929547 update or the AVG 8 Free install.

You will notice that AVG 8 has a Link Scanner and invades IE7 by scanning
all of your links in a Google search to determine if they are harmful. The
little wheel turns after each link and provides a green star with a checkmark
if the link is thought to be OK. How cute! Turning off the Link Scanner in
AVG did not solve the printing problem. I was a fan of AVG 7.5 because it was
straight forward and did not interfere with other processes as the big guys
do. So if you turn off the protected mode in IE7 so you can print and then
eliminate the irritating bonk that happens when you open each page will AVG
give you adequate protection?

M

Mate

That worked for me, thanks

Have you tried going to (IE) Tools - Internet Options - Security and
turning off Protected mode?

I had this exact same issue and it drove me nuts for about 2 days. I found I
could print to anything put a locally attached printer. I could print to the
XPS Document writer I have installed and I could print to my PDF creator
without issue. Once I got a PDF I could print that PDF all day without
issue, I just couldn't print from within IE7.

What I found was that my problems began after installing AVG Free 8.x
earlier in the week. I had been able to print the previous weekend, but was
unable to print after the installation. As others have noted I was able to
print with Protected Mode turned off, but not with it turned on. Once I
uninstalled AVG Free 8.x I could print again from IE7 without issue. If you
have AVG Free 8.x installed you might try the suggestion made by Tony Zamboni
and install the patch or just uninstall AVG Free 8.x and reinstall AVG Free
7.x

Good luck.

Hello All. I have narrowed down the problem and solution. The system
is my father's and I do not have exact cause
Problem: Vista Ultimate 32 will not print from IE7 with UAC on. All
other applications seem to print fine and IE7 will print with UAC off.
System specs. Dell Inspiron 530 with Intel Quad processors. 4 GB
memory, printer HP 8250.
I reloaded Vista last night and it was able to print fine. I then
started loading applications and patches. All was fine until we loaded
AVG Free and Norton Ghost 12 legal copy.
IE stopped printing with UAC on. I rolled back with Windows system
restore to just after initial Vista load and the system started printing
fine from IE7 and with UAC on. It was late and we did not test what was
the exact culprit but it looks like one of two items, AVG free or Norton
Ghost 7 on the Inspiron. I have have a Dell 820 with Dual Core with
Vista 32 and 2GB memory, AVG Free and Norton Ghost 12 and it is workiing
fine. I will try to test futher and let everyone know more details but
it will be a week or so. Steve

It AVG 8.0 that causes the problem go back to 7.5 and it works OK
