I leave my pc on most of the time and after installing XP
I seem to lose my conection when idle for a few hours.
Is there a way to stop this from happening?

How's your internet connected? What sort of connection are you using?
Baseband? Broadband?
Do you have any router's installed? Is this a wired or wireless connection?

Find an ISP that does not disconnect it it is not used; Like, DSL or
Cable maybe there are dial-up ISPs that do not disconnect. You don't
mention what kind of a connection you have. the other thing you can do
is to contact your ISP for advice.
