Internet connection sharing problem

Hi,

I am looking for some help, here is the problem. I want to network my laptop
wirelessly, so I brought a wireless router and a PCMCIA card. The problem is,
I have a USB modem and no USB port on my router. So my thoughts were to
connect my desktop PC to the modem as usual and then connect my router to the
desktop PC via it's Ethernet card - Things are going fine and I can share
files between the 2 PC's but the problem comes when I try to access the
internet via my laptop (wirelessly) it asks me for a connection and then
cannot detect network settings etc...

Here is the equipment I have....
Desktop PC running Windows XP Home with a Boradcom 440x 10/100intergrated
controller this is connected to the LAN port of a D-Link 624 router.

Laptop running Windows XP Pro with a D-Link DWG-G650 PCMCIA wireless network
card

I appreciate I have no idea about networking and hopefully it is due to my
naivety that I cannot get an internet connection wirelessly on my Laptop.

Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

On the laptop:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools | Internet Options | Connections.
3. Select "Never dial a connection".
4. Click "LAN Settings".
5. Un-check all of the boxes.
6. Click OK twice to exit.

Thanks Steve but I followed your advice exactly and unfortunately it never
solved the problem... Any other ideas?

You need to disable DHCP on the router and enable Internet Connection
Sharing on the Desktop.

Reboot the laptop and try again.

I agree with Doug's suggestion to disable DHCP on the router. Since
you said that the computers can share files with each other, I assumed
that you had already done that.

Check the laptop's wireless network connection TCP/IP properties
(right-click | Status | Support | Details). They should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

If they don't, then the problem is probably that DHCP is enabled on
the router.

If those steps don't solve the problem, please provide more
information. What exactly happens when you try to access the Internet
on the laptop? What is the complete text of the messages that you see
about network connections and settings?
