Internet Connection problem on high speed cable.

Hi,

There is a problem that I face quite often on Internet Connection through
DSL or Cable modem on Windows XP home edition. It doesn't connect to the
internet.

I do get a proper ipaddress with default gateway wherein ping to default
gateway is successful and also ping to ipaddress of any non firewalled
website (like yahoo.com) is successful, however while pinging directly to the
website results in "could not find host".
It seems a DNS problem. I have tried system restore, power cycled the modem
and the system, reinstalled the NIC drivers, even deleted winsock keys from
registry and reinstalled the TCP/IP suite, But nothing helps. Ultimately I
have to reinstall Windows XP altogether and that works so this is not an ISP
problem. Also let me mention that I have even tried creating a new user
profile but to no avail.

Please let me know if there is a solution to this or any patch available.

Thank you,
Sonit

You probably have/had a virus - check your hosts file. Can you ping a DNS
server? Do you get assigned any DNS server addresses??

If you can ping via ip address but not by name your DHCP is not
functioning. I can't tell you how to fix it, but that is the problem.

This could also be something as simple as a dying cable modem. I just
had to replace mine. They don't last forever, and if yours is over 2
years old, consider replacing it. You say through "either DSL or cable
modem", so which are you using? You have both types of connections into
your house or business? If you do have this strange setup, then of
course you must have two modems and the bad modem can't be the issue.
Are you using a router? The router might be bad. Give more details
about your actual setup for more help.
