Would that be located under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as well?

To get to services right click my computer and select manage then services
and applications then services.

I thought for a moment we had gotten it, but no such luck.

Have you changed any other service settings in the past?

To my knowledge, no I haven't changed any other settings. When I did the last thing you suggested, I couldn't disconnect from the internet without shutting down my computer. So I changed it back, and now my automatic disconnection screen pops up, which it wasn't before, so that's a help.
Quite a puzzle huh?

Is hide inactive icons items enabled? To check right click the taskbar and
select properties and if it's enabled uncheck it. Also run regedit and goto
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\TrayNotify and delete the items in the right pane and reboot.

Did it, and did it, and nothing.

I'm stumped, sorry. You could try a repair install of xp.
