Internet connection differences Pro/Home

I have DSL service which works fine when connected to my laptop
running XP Pro. The Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) is set to automatically
get IP addresses.
When I remove the modem cable and plug it into my desktop running XP
Home and also configured for automatically getting IP addresses, it
won't connect to the internet.
Any suggestions for correcting this?

Usually you can't just unhook the modem and plug it into a new network card
and get it to work. The modem stores info about your network card, its mac
address. When you unplug it and hook it to another network card / computer
it now sees a different mac address for the network card and gets confused.
Some isp's even log your mac address and only allow connections with that
mac address. Usually you just have to unplug the modem from computer and
unplug the power from it. Wait 5-10 minutes. With the desktop off connect
the modem and then connect power to the modem. Let it sync up, then boot the
computer up. It should now pull an ip address.

Perhaps it's worth getting yourself a wireless router to allow you to share
the connection. Most have 4 wired ports as well as the wireless AP. The
router uses the IP address supplied by your ISP and allocates two "local IP
addresses" to the two computers you have. These day I would look for one
that does uPnP. Try the D-Link DI-624

Cable router is the best way to go.
a d-link 604 was $20 after rebate a few weeks ago at Office Max.

even at $50 it will keep you from going bald, which is cheaper than
hair replacement therapy.
