Internet access via other computer without using ICS

Is there any way to configure a networked computer to access the internet
through another without using ICS?
My intended configuration is:
My main PC will be connecting to the Internet (I want to set it up as a
'gateway' for the other computer to access, which is connected via a
crossover cable)
My other computer will access Internet resources through the main PC

You need some sort of NAT (Network Address Translation) software. Since ICS
is free and easy to configure I would recommend you use it. If you have a
non-dialup connection (cable, DSL, etc) you could get a router which would
handle the details of NAT and sharing for you. There are dial-up routers
available but if you're going to go that route why not use ICS for free?
