I am looking for an internet accelerator. It seems to me that years ago I
had a little program that I downloaded from somewhere that was just one
little window. It did this for me I just set the numbers. Do any of you
know what I am talking about? It also seems like I could set this myself in
my mode. But now I am not so sure with this XP stuff. Hope you can
understand me. :)

Probably an app called NetSonic. It worked well, too.

XP does need any help in that way like 98 did.

Every can't afford broadband, especially if you are like me and living
on a retirement fixed income. :-(

Depends where you are, of course, but here in the UK I think one would
be hard pressed to save any money by using a dial-up service instead of
one of the entry-level "sort of broadband" services -- they're about
the same price per month as an "use anytime" dial-up service.

You're lucky then............in my area, I pay $15.95 for dial up, dsl
begins at $39.99 a month, quite a difference for someone on a fixed income

Please Biff, if you can't contribute anything sensible to a
thread, then could you please just shut-up?

I'm sure Swans4me would have looked at broadband options - maybe
they are not available for any number of reasons (such as not in
area, too expensive).

Most of the Internet accelerators now offered are client/server
applications so you run the client and your requests are made through a
compressed proxy connection. Netscape Internet service has been
advertising their unlimited dial-up with web accelerator for only
$9.95/month.

FYI, if anyone here is paying old-school dial-up rates of $19.95+ you're
being had! My DSL company (dslextreme) offers DSL for about 20 bucks a
month now.

For the very cheapest reliable dial-up service I recommend
http://www.access-4-free.com/ which is one-time $5 setup, then 10 hours
per month nation-wide dialup access for no charge. If you go over 10
hours you're charged $1/hour up to $10/month max - passed 10 hours and
you default to unlimited service. I have this plan as a back up to my DSL
when traveling and such.

IIRC unmetered AOL dialup is 16 GBP per month and their start up
broadband package is 1GBP more expensive. UK.
