Internal dialup modem fried. Now I can't uninstall its driver

A lightning strike took out my internal (PCI) 56 k dialup
modem today. (It also took out my ADSL modem and Sound
Blaster.) The latter two have been replaced but I can't
install a new dialup modem because I can't uninstall the
driver for the old one unless the hardware is present.
Putting the fried modem back in is no good because the
computer hangs on bootup.

How do I uninstall the old modem's driver? The old modem is
a venerable "SoftV90 Voice Speakerphone Modem". A Google
search turns up nothing useful.

(FWIW: I use the dialup modem as a backup in case my ADSL
connection goes out.)

If Safe mode does not work, you could use Driver Cleaner Pro (freeware), My
Drivers (shareware), or Driver Guide Toolkit (shareware). You can find these
programs with Google.

Look for removing "phantom" devices in Google newsgroup search.

Here what I was able to find:

Add
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

Then, in Device Manager, Check on "Show hidden devices"

Then, remove the dead modem settings

After, check in C:\Windows\inf and remove the added *.inf files that the
modem drivers installed.

Also, un-install the Drivers in Add/Remove Programs, if there exist an entry
for them.
