Intermittently VERY SLOW

Hi. On an intermittent basis (say, one to two times per week), ANY
application that I initiate takes forever to open. Examples: Microsoft
Word can take 2 to 5 minutes, Firefox browser 1 to 2 minutes, Hearts card
game 45 seconds to 1 minute, etc. When this occurs, the CPU is 100%
committed and "Ctrl-Alt-Del" doesn't respond for up to 2 minutes. This
anomaly happens only upon the initial startup of the PC on the given day.
If I shutdown the PC and restart, everything works fine the second time
around, as if nothing unusual occurred the first time. Please help. BTW,
my PC is an HP 735n, with a relatively new (IDE?) hard drive, Windows XP OS,
and Athlon processor. Let me know if you need any more information to help
troubleshoot this problem. Thanks in advance!

One probably would start by opening event viewer, chk out the times that
the computer bogged down, certainly thiers an event or warning listed.
Click on the url enclosed in an event/warning,this opens knowlege base
help/support in xp,usually with a fix.
