Intermittent menus appear??

Windows XP Pro
Menu lists appear as if one had right clicked the mouse.
This happens at random now and then.
I don't believe it coincides with the cursor placement as a normal right
click menu would.
So, it's always a surprise and can be quite an annoyance.
The mouse has been replaced.
Rebooting seems to fix the problem for a while but eventually the menus
start showing up again (only one menu at a time).
I suspected a virus but haven't found one with a scan.

I've never seen this before so I'm looking for pointers, suggestons, etc.

Thanks,

Fred

What is the connector on the mouse, usb or ps/2? If you have the same
issues with different mice that both use the ps/2 port, try a usb
mouse. If the problem goes away, then you know the fault is with the
ps/2 port on the motherboard. If you are using only usb mice, try a
ps/2 mouse.

Malke,

OK - long time no talk...

The mouse was a USB-interfaced wireless.
We switched to a USB cabled mouse with no change in the symptom.
The ps/2 port seems to not work - a mouse there isn't recognized as being
present.
So, we can't switch it seems.

Thanks,

Fred

Ooh, that's a bad one. Well, it seems that you have got some hardware
issues with the motherboard if the ps/2 port won't work. If this is a
new computer under warranty, contact the mftr.'s tech support for
replacement. Since I don't know anything about your computer I can't
make a suggestion about whether it is worth replacing the motherboard.
You may want to take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA) for a hands-on diagnosis.

Yeah, it was *built by* a local computer shop that was quite good at
repairs. I just heard he moved away. I'm in "the sticks" so not much local
capability I'm afraid.

I hate it when that happens. I can't tell you how many clients have come
in here with machines built by "some local guy" who is now gone. When I
open up the case, I often find really crap hardware inside. It sounds
like you've got one of those computers although of course I can't tell
definitively without looking at the box.

Consider replacing the machine. You can get a decent basic box from Dell
or HP for around $600usd, sometimes even less.

Good luck,

Malke

Not inadvertantly pressing the "application" key on your keyboard by
any chance when it happens?

Pressing that key does the same thing as using a mouse right click.

Could actually be that key that is causing the problem and nothing to
do with your mouse at all.

Nice catch. Maybe Fred can switch out his keyboard instead, although it
bothers me that he says the ps/2 mouse port doesn't work at all.
