Intermittenly getting prompt for network password

Running XP Pro, Outlook 2003
Intermittently I am getting the pop up to Enter Network Password when
checking a POP3 mail account. I tired the MS fix of editing the registry and
re-entering the password, and have check 'save password' yet it continues.
I may or may not get the Enter Password Prompt when Outlook is auto checking
mail or when I manually check mail.
Any suggestion are appreciated, as the pop up prompt is annoying.
Thank You

I've seen this typically when there's an intermittant problem with the POP3
email server (where your email is hosted) or anywhere on the Internet between
you and your email server (i.e. your Internet connection at your location,
your ISP, or any server in-between). Basically Outlook is timing out and
when it does that, you get a credentials prompt; it's misleading.

It's also possible that you've set Outlook to check for email every 1 or 2
minutes, for example, instead of every 5 minutes or more. Some ISPs or mail
servers limit the number of times you can check your email within an
unspecified period of time. But usually this will show up as an error while
checking email...

Thanks epsilonx! It was the Time Out issue. The Server Time Out was set to
short (1 sec) I had to take it up to 2.5 seconds before the problem went
away.

Must have been a change in my ISP or POP3 mail server system that increased
time outs...it's worked fine up until a few weeks ago.

You helped save what little sanity I have left!
Thanks!
