I have ahome network set up with win xp, 2000 and ME
machines! Filesharing between the XP and ME machines works
fine but i have aproblem with the windows 2000 computers
as when i first turn them on they can easilly be acsessed
across the network but after a certain time acsess to the
shared folders disappaears (seams to be after about 15-30
mins) and when you try to acsess the folder that you were
looking at earlier the acsess has gone! and the error
message saying the network path was not found. but i know
the computer is still on and working fine! If you restsrt
the machine it works fine! Whilst this is happening
acsess to the windows XP and ME machine is fine. it is
just a problem with windows 2000

Hope someone can help me!

Could be the power saving feature of your ethernet card,
which deactivates itself after some period of time. See if
this is the case in Device Manager.
Also, when the access to that folder is gone, what is the
output of these commands:

ping computername
ping ipaddress
net view \\computername

Thanks for the reply i have just turned off the power
saving function to see if that works! I wouldn't have e
thought that would be aproblem as my internet acsess still
works (via a arouter) and i can still ping the computer
both by ip address and IP name! at the moment it is
working so i can't try the net view command!

In fact the opposite scenario has happend now in that a
win XP machine is not allowing any one to acsess it from a
WIN 2K machine although i suspect this is the firewall....
I know the original problem is not firewall related as i a
have turned that off in windows 2K!

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated,. thanks in
advance

Please Check "Guest" Account on Windows XP.
I think , you must enable this account.

Enabling the guest account on the system is a bad idea, especially
if the machines are on a public network.

There is no *must* reason to enable the guest account as long as
there are identical user accounts in all the machines being
networked.

I am not so worried about the windows 200 machine being able acsess the win
XP machine as iam 99% sure that is down to the instalation of the firewall on
thsat PC!!!! What iam struggleing with is the windows XP comps (both pro and
home) not being able to acsess the shared file on the win 2k machine all of
the time! I have turned opff the power saving facilites of the network card
and i can ping the computer from the XP machine and ican view the folders
just ewhen i try to acsess them it comes up with network path not found and
the path is inacsessible! The same thing haoppens if i try to acsess them
via my network places on the win 2 k machine!

Net /view lists all the folders fine!

Anymore suggestions as to what the problem is!!

I think the reason that it was working last time was that it works for
awhile when i first turn the computer on but then goes! also the win XP
machine don't display the computer in my network places despite showing all
the other machines and you can only get up a directory listing if you type \\
computername in the address box!

Thanks in advance

Some things I can think of:

* After the access is disabled. Check that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is
still enabled .There might be some virus which disables it.

* Check your machine for Adwares and Spywares.
Net /view lists all the folders fine!

IF you are using a router, see that 255.255.255.255 broadcasts are
allowed by the router. Also check that if Win2000 is in same subnet
as other machines and is assigned the same workgroup name as
others.
