When the desktop is idle it continually seems to be "checking" the external,
USB harddrives about every 20 minutes. Can this be stopped.

I leave the desktop running 24/7 and it bothers me when the USB drives run
for a few secons every 15-20 minutes.

Any ideas?

Get Sysinternals FileMon:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html

Check an external drive it the 'Volumes' menu and
wait until the drive is accessed. Then you should see
which process it is.

You may find that this is due to the Indexer or a virus scanner.
