external usb hdd questions

Questions:
#1-Presently, I use the 'safely remove hardware' icon and turn off my
external USB hard drive prior to shutting down at night, and then turn
it back on after starting the PC up in the AM.
Is this the right way or is there a smarter way? I figure it can't be
good to keep the hard drive on all the time.
#2- I'm using the external drive for data, like all my document files,
downloads, and Thunderbird mail folder. This has the advantage of
allowing me to have all my stuff on portable media.
But the downside is the latency and running the usb hdd all the time.
When I built this PC, I put in two identical 250G SATA hard drives
with the intention of doing a RAID 0, but I was unable to figure out
the configuration, so the D drive is idle, and I only use a the C
drive.
I'm thinking I should use the
D drive for all my data, and the external USB HDD for backup.
So I've copied the contents of the external USB HDD over to the D
drive, but am still using the external HDD until I figure out how to
best manage both drives so I know the content of the backup is the
same as the content on the data drive.
I'm not comfortable with using the XPpro backup utility, because the
data is then only readable when it is restored. Right?
I like the copy command, but if I attempt to copy D drive onto the USB
HDD every night, it'll take hours.
Is there an application available that can compare the two drives and
do a differential 'copy' to sync them up? This would be instead of
doing a differential backup.

Virtually any backup application will do that.
There are two many to choose from & some are free
I've used Handy Backup, Genie backup and currently use Backer to sync data
between a hd and an external usb, takes about 4 mins to check 60k of files &
sync were required (it produces an exact copy)
