Interesting CD-R Adventure

I have a CD-R and a DVD/CD-R drive hooked up under Windows
2000. The DVD/CD-R is a new install. They are fine in
the device driver, and they can be used to burn CDs and
DVDs with no problem. I can see in the burning program
that the file structure of the CD is fine.

They don't work consistently to read CDs or DVDs. Most of
the time, Windows Explorer will not acknowledge that there
is a disk in there. Sometimes it will. When it does,
everything is dandy. This seems to come and go at random,
rebooting has no effect.

Does this sound familiar to anyone out there?
