My Memorex CD/DVD burner is not working right. i cant burn CDs. I can
still read CDs and DVDs. I can even burn DVDs, but not CDs. When i put
in a blank CD-R, explorer shows no name for the cd in my computer, no
autoplay comes up, and when i copy files to a cd using the wizard, i get
"cant complete the cd burning wizard". If i use an iso burning program,
i get an error saying "no disk inserted". I tried 10 Memorex cds that
didnt work on my computer in my friends computer and they worked. any ideas?

You say you can't burn CD's but can burn DVD's? What companies DVD's are you
using?

Have you tried looking for an updated driver for the device? Most computer
manufacturers have updates on the support site if they are available.

You can try a disk cleaner, but probably the laser for cd's is dead.
Combo drives have two lasers - one for the dvd's and one for the cd's.
If the cleaner doesn't work, replace the drive.

Probably a problem with the CD lens, you might try a cleaner disk.

I've heard a lot about Memorex. And the talk wasn't good. My advice to you:
Use other compaines, but don't use Maxell.
Here's a link to a few pics of a destroyed Maxell CD-R Pro:
http://genedefcon.ifastnet.com/pcpic/

Nice link. Too bad I couldn't really view it. I think the name of the site
should be changed... Maybe to some more appropriate like
"iextrememlyslow.com"

Also, by looking at the close-up of the bottom view on Pink paper, it looks
like it has been run over about 500 times. Extremely scratched up. Perhaps
it looks like that because it has "road rash"?

I assume that the CD lens both reads and burns? If that is the case, then
my unit (that has a similar problem,) must not have a problem with the lens
then, as it can read regular CDs and CD-ROMs, just won't recognize the
existence of ANY CD-R(W) media, even the stuff that was previously burned
with that exact drive. No problems at all with any form of DVDs...

Oh, I'm someone else with the same or similar problem, not the original
poster...

Any luck with the cleaner? I never have. Reads CDs fin, just won't
recognize any form of burnable CD media, including disc that were already
burnt using that exact burner.

Let me know if your new drive works when you get it. I don't have the cash
at the moment for a new one. Curious if it might have something to do with
some software I have installed, or the drive itself.
