Inter Explorer crashing system

i have a system (win98) that in normal mode cannot have any folders opened
up. and they all blame inetexplorer.

when i first try to open up any window (folder, or internet explorer) i
first get a msg that says:

this program has perfereomed an illegal operation and will be shut
down...yada yada yada...

then i close that error window and i get:

an error has occured in internet explorer. internet explorer will now
close...yada yada yada...

so i am assuming it has to do with IE, but have no idea how to fix it.

any thoughts? thanks ahead....

well it was my sister's machine and finally fixed it....

i EMAILED her the setup for spybot 1.2 (3.5 mb, fortunatly her Outlook
Express worked)

she installed it
ran the update
then ran the scan for problems and fixed it


and her machine was fixed!

tada!!!!!!
