IntelliMouse Optical Mouse Weirdness

The two buttons on the left and right side of my IntelliMouse Optical mouse
are exhibiting weird behavior. I have them set so they act as 'Back' and
'Forward' buttons in Internet Explorer.

They stopped working as 'Back' and 'Forward' the other day, so I went into
the Control Panel, clicked on the Mouse icon and choose Restore Defaults and
then clicked on OK.

The buttons started working again, until I quit IE and restarted it. Then
they didn't work again. It seems I have to do the Restore Defaults thing
everytime I start IE to get them to work. They used to work all the time
without going through this ordeal.

What is my next step to fix or troubleshoot this problem? I tried loading a
newer driver version, but Windows says I'm using the latest version.

Thanks,

I had a similiar problem on another mouse. It turned out that I was
just out of range to the receiver. It seeemed like the range
decreased as the mouse got older. Bizzar, but moving the receiver
within 18" of the mouse fixed the problem.

It may be worth a try. I know it doesn't make sense that the range
would decrease over the life of the mouse.

Try to locate the latest version of the Intelipoint mouse drivers. Version
5.4 just came out this week.

Have you checked the mouse battery(batteries)?

Rich - Unfortunately I forgot to mention that this is a wired USB mouse, and
not wireless, so it's probably not a range problem. But thanks for your
thoughts and help. --Fitz

Yves - As I mentioned in my reply to Rich, this is a wired USB mouse, so
there are no batteries. I will try to see if I can located and load the
Version 5.4 driver. Thanks for your help. --Fitz

Yves - I'm not finding the Ver. 5.4 drivers on Microsoft's website. Any links
you might be able to provide would be appreciated. Thanks.
