Intel Q9300 new with windows xp installed

I have just purchased a new pc and added windows xp to it, upon updating sp3
was offered which I downloaded and installed.
Since installing the pc occasionally just shuts down and reboots for no
apparent reason, I'm seriously considering taking sp3 off.
I get no error message and no recovery message once it restarts, its really
strange it just crashed to a black screen and restarts, once restarted it can
be fine or crash out again almost immediately , there is no pattern or link
to any particular piece of software but there's barely anything installed.

Maybe a virus. Probably a hardware failure.

Do you have antivirus software installed? Try running a boot scan to
see if anything comes up.
If not, then it's probably a hardware failure. Your computer is still
in guarantee so take it back to the store...

Control Panel>System>Advanced, Under Startup and Recovery click Settings,
then under System failure uncheck Automatically restart. This will give the
BSOD which will have error codes for you to reference.
