I have just bought a new laptop with Intel Duo Centrino 1.8Ghz. It compares really well, in terms of speed, to my Pentium 4 3.2Ghz Desktop PC, and it is actually faster at dealing with more than one program open at the same time, than my desktop.

I'm just wondering if the Intel Duo CPU can work as one combined CPU i.e. 1.8Ghz x 2 = 3.2Ghz? Or do they always work as 2 separate CPUs??

Is it possible to select an option where the CPU's are combined so that when I'm using just one program (i.e. a very powerful CAD program) I can utilize the maximum CPU?

no you can't combaine your duo CPU the way you've mentioned above. Coz in fact you have 2 CPU but just in one case.
