insufficient memory on micro word

Every time I try to use micro soft word it comes up and quickly goes away.
when I try to open a file quickly it says that there is insufficient memory,
I have had this for over a year and never had this problem until a few days
ago. I don't use enough to warrant lack of memory. I have windows xp.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

You haven't given us enough information to get focused troubleshooting.

If the solution isn't as above then try System Restore to roll back a few
days. To do this go to Start->Help and Support->Pick a task section->click
System Restore. Use the wizard to revert back. Do not go too far back. Just
take it back to a date before the problem began.

System Restore will roll your system back so anything you install after that
date will have to be reinstalled again. also be aware that while System
Restore doesn't make changes to non system files it will affect .exe files
and some other files that reside outside of the My Documents Directory. I
advise people to ensure that they have a backup of their important data
before running System Restore. At the very least if you tend to store things
on the Desktop other than normal icons or you save music to locations other
than the My Documents folder you should copy those files into the My
Documents directory as it is protected from System Restore.

If the above isn't working you may want to try reinstalling MS Word.

Please post back with your results.

try this before you go too far ...

find and delete (with Word closed) the file "normal.dot" , it will be
recreated when you restart Word
