when i try to install windows xp it gets half way through the install and
then i get a message that says i have 2 versions of windows running, cannot
complete install. i only have windows 98 running. does anyone know what and
why i get this message?

Hi

What kind of XP CD are you trying to install? Are you attempting an
'upgrade' from Win 98? It sounds as though XP maybe trying to install
itself onto the same partition as Win 98 is already installed onto.

To add to Will's comment, if you are attempting to upgrade Win98 with an XP
OEM cd, you cannot. The upgrade installer is missing from OEM cd's. If you
have a retail XP cd, you should start Win98 and at the desktop insert the XP
cd by selecting Install from the splash screen.

Before you upgrade, you should run the Upgrade Advisor from Other Tasks on
the XP splash screen and take care of issues found by the UA. You should
also make sure your Win98 installation is free from viruses and spyware. It
is helpful but not essential to defragment the Win98 installation first.

If you are trying another type of installation, post back.

i'm trying to upgrade from windows 98 to a retail xp home edition cd. i
have clicked on "install" from the splash screen, there is no spyware or
antivirus running
This is the Blocking Issues i get when i try to install:

"Setup found some issues that will prevent you from upgrading your Windows
installation. You must fix all of these issues before you can upgrade to
Windows XP.

Installation Requirements

Other Operating Systems Found
You cannot upgrade this Windows installation to Windows XP, because you have
more than one operating system installed on your computer. Upgrading one
operating system can cause problems with files shared by the other operating
system, and is therefore not permitted."
