Installing XP

My computer won't run the XP Setup CD even though I've changed the boot
sequence for the cd-rom drive to boot first. Even in spite of that not
working, I ran setup with the 6 floppy disk, went through the installation on
the cd for the remainder of the install, and then my computer did the reboot.
After it reboots, it still does not recognize the cd, and does not finish the
installation process or continue to booting Windows. What is wrong, what do I
do?

I'm assuming that XP was not the operating system that was originally
installed on your system and I'm also assuming your system meets XP's
minimum requirements for installation. That said, before you tried to run
installation, with your system booted to your previous setup, did you first
run the upgrade advisor. If not, return to your previous setup, once
installed, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears,
select "Check System Compatibility."

If the setup screen does not appear but the drive in which you placed the CD
works for other CDs, my guess would be your XP setup disk is damaged in
which case you can get a replacement from Microsoft:

This is a brand new hard drive, it's had no other systems on it, so I can't
return to any previous setup. At this point, I just want any OS to boot up on
it, but it will not resume setup after rebooting. It will also not recognize
my hard drive as master with an OS on it, even though it is set as master in
IDE1, and my cd-rom as slave in IDE2. Do I need to change any jump cables or
anything?

Set up your cd drive as master on IDE2

That's a completely different issue and scenario than what you first
described and is likely a hardware issue, perhaps how it is jumpered as you
suggest but I can't say for sure.

See Mike Hall's suggestion in this thread, also try your question on the
windowsxp.hardware newsgroup.
