Installing XP SP2 did not solve my problem - problem with Controllers

Doug

Hi,

After an installation of XP I had yellow question marks against the
following ..

- Network Controller
- SM Buss Controller
- PCI Drive
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

Reading through various forums I thought my problem was because I did
not have SP2 installed, unfortunately installing this did not solve my
problem and I still have the yellow question marks

Any ideas ?

TIA
Doug

Sorry, to be precise ..

Under device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark under the
controllers/devices listed above

You didn't install the motherboard drivers, did you?

Windows XP (SP2, SP1, or RTM) doesn't conain every driver for every product
ever manufactured. Sometimes you have to go direct (most of the time you
should anyway) to the manufacturer's web page to download and install the
latest driver for your hardware.

That is what you were seeing. You need the latest drivers.

Looks like you need the motherboard chipset drivers and the network card
drivers.

Thanks for your reply

Is there an easy way finding out what the motherboard chipset and the
network card are without opening up my laptop

Cheers

It's a laptop?

Then you know who manufacturered it.

Go to their support web pages for support and download the latest drivers
from there.

Hi Shenan,
I did that, then I've selected Device Manager from within System
properties, every entry under "other devices" has a yellow exclamation
mark, for each of these
- Network Controller
- PCI Device
- SM Bus Controller
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

I've selected every driver but none of them work

I get "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find
the necessary software"

Yes, you need to download and install the drivers for these hardware from
the manufacturer, not from Microsoft.

Of course, since many of the parts don't work, you can't get them with the
laptop directly.

Take the laptop with you to a machine that has Internet access, and use the
model number, which is normally listed on the bottom of the machine, to
locate drivers for those elements at the manufacturer's site. Download
them to some sort of removable media, like a CD or USB key, and then run the
driver installs one at a time on the laptop. I usually start with the
network card driver and then the video driver.

Hi,
It's a Sony FE15S - I've downloaded the preinstalled Drivers and
preinstalled Utilities zip files

unzipping the Preinstalled Drivers zip file gives the following
directories ...

Audio
Bluetooth
Camera
Chipset
FlashMedia
FlashMediaSetting
Modem
Network1
Network2
Pointing
SATA
SonyImgF
SonyNC
USBMouse
Video
WirelessLAN

I've tried each of these subdirectories in turn but with no luck

Cheers
Doug
