I get a message that I can not upgrade and I'm prompted to do a new
installation. I do not want to do a clean install and format any partitions.
If I continue with the installtion will I loose existing files and
applications? Thanks Steve

Is it Windows XP Home?
Windows 2000 can not be upgrade to Windows XP Home.

Or is Windows XP Pro OEM?
Windows XP Pro OEM is intended is intended for Clean Installation only and
can not perform an upgrade.
One of the many reasons OEM is cheaper than retail.

Typically with an upgrade,no you dont, but if 2000 isnt upgradeable with
to many conflicts betwwen the two, guess a clean install is warranted....

Thanks for responding. I want to install XP Professional. When I first tried
to install XP professional I got the message that it wasn't upgradable.
However, it did let me continue with a new install. I just want to make sure
that by doing so I don't lose any programs and or files. I'm not sure if
during the "New" install the partitions would automatically be formatted.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Steve

Steve;
If you continue with a new install, most likely all your data will be lost.
Back-up all important data first.
