Hi,

I am running ME op a P-IV with a 75 Gig internal drive.
Can I install XP Home Edition (full edition, not an
upgrade) on this computer and, if so, how?

Thanks,

ROC

While you can perform an upgrade installation, it's a better idea to backup
any data you want to keep and perform a clean install. After backing up, set
the boot order in the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first. Place the Windows XP
CD in the drive, reboot, and follow the prompts. Refer to the following URL
for specifics:

For starters, don't waste your money on buying the full edition. If you
currently have Me, the upgrade version will work just fine, no difference in
what you get.
To install, just load the cd and install away. Personally, if it was me, I
would buy a 2nd hard disk, install it as the master and move your ME disk to
the slave position and do a clean install.

Yes. Provided it is a proper *retail* full CD and not one of the OEM
ones that require to be installed on a clean formatted disk.

First Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm and note advice on
disabling/uninstalling some things (including any CD burning software)

You do it by running the CD from the ME, take the Install, continue with
the upgrade

Yes you can. However if you own Me, you qualify for an upgrade,
and since an upgrade is cheaper than the Full version (and
identical to it in all respects except the rules for
qualification to install) that's what you should buy.

Both the upgrade and full versions can be used either for a clean
installation or an upgrade. The only difference is that if you do
a clean installation with the upgrade version, when prompted to
do so, you need to insert a CD of a previous qualifying version
as proof of ownership.

By the way, do not mistake an OEM version for a full version. It
has several disadvantages, among which is that it can *not* do an
upgrade.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with
Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware
quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models in
Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is
quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
