I want to use my xp home ed oem (that's already installed on one pc) on a HP
computer that has ME on it to see if it will workand the system and if so can
i then buy a new oem xp and and activate the installation using the new
product key. I don't want to buy the software first if the HP pavillion 7865
won't take the XP software.

The xp oem edition wont work on any other computer but the one it came
with. The hp pavilion will upgrade w/o a problem, you can even do a clean
installation of xp w/o ME,by booting to xp cd.

the xp oem was bought when a new hard drive was purchased and i
installed it on that hd.

The "technical" answer is that you can probably install that OEM copy where
ever you want and activate it and live your life just fine.

The "according to what you agreed to" answer is that it is (the OEM copy)
now associated with and TIED to the original machine you installed it on -
if that machine melts, is loaded into a canon and then blows up - the
license you bought is gone too.

my point is that i don't intend to try to activate the xp on the hp but will
buy a new copy of the software to either install over the one i used for
trial or use that key to activate it, i'm using the orig one now on my pc and
the new one is for the person who intends to use it and can register the new
software when they want. My fear is that some part of the HP won't be
recognized by the new operating system or will require hardware installation
disks or drivers that i don't have access to and if that's so i don't want to
spend $ on software i can't use.

Run the XP CD from within Windows ME, and when the XP menu appears, take the
option to do a compatibility check.. that will tell you all that you need to
know without having to destroy your ME installation..

Yes, you can do what you described, since it sounds like a generic unbranded
OEM version. When you purchase a new OEM, you can change the Product key
from the information in the link below.
