Installing XP Home upgrade version over existing XP home

Is it possible to install a new upgrade version of XP home (from new CD) over
my existing XP home that presently is installed on my computer. The reason I
am asking this question is that I would like to get a complete separate
windows CD instead of relying on the software provided by my computer
manufacturer, and I have read somewhere that to install the upgrade version
you might need to have an earlier version of windows (not XP?) to be on the
computer.

Yes....just be sure that the upgrade version you are buying matches the OEM
version you have plus SP2
if you XP Home you would need to purchase XP Home SP2
