Hi,

I have a fried with a laptop with Windows ME. He didn't
get any cds with the laptop, it was from an MBA Course
from university, that is how they gave it.

He wants to install Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade
Version that requires a full version of 98 / ME on the
computer.

Will he need the CD Key from the full copy of 98 / ME in
order to install XP Home Edition Upgrade Version?

Also, when he installs it, will he have the opportunity
to boot up with the cd and then format the disk and
install fresh, or does it simply upgrade his existing
disk with XP Home Edition Upgrade Versions?

Let me know.

If your friend owns either a "full version" or "upgrade version"
of Windows 98, and it is not installed on any other computer,
it will qualify for installing Windows XP Home "upgrade version"
"clean". It is not necessary to install Windows 98, then upgrade
it to Windows XP Home. Also, the Windows 98 Product Key
is not required when performing a "clean install".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.
