Can I install Windows XP Home edition (full install) on a
PC running windows 2000 professional? Will this require a
dual install? If so, can I then uninstall the windows
2000 and free up space on the hard drive?

You can't upgrade to Windows XP Home from Windows 2000 because of the
different architecture of both OS's, Windows 2000 Professional is a business
operating system, so its successor would be Windows XP Professional edition.

The reason for this is because 2000 Professional and XP Professional share
features primarily for use in network environments with features for joining
a Domain, Group Policy.

XP Home is a consumer edition of XP that allows upgrading from Windows 98
and ME.

Yes, but you have to install it cleanly. An upgrade to XP Home is
not possible (only to XP Professional).

Will this require a
dual install?

No, that's optional.

Clean install? by that do you mean I have to have a clean hard drive to
install it on. Or can I install on the hard drive with windows 2000 on it?

My personal opinion is that multiple OS's on the same PC should be on
different physical hard drives. This way they can all run indepentent
and all you have to do is change the hard drive boot order in the bios
to run the different OS's.

Of course, this is just how I like to do it.

A clean installation is one which is performed on a drive (or at
least a partition) with nothing on it, or one which, at the
beginning of the installation, wipes out whatever is on the
drive.

Or can I install on the hard drive with windows
2000 on it? jb

Only if you install it to a different partition. As I said, you
can *not* upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Home (you can
upgrade to XP Professional, but not Home).
