Installing Windows XP over Windows 98

I just received Windows XP full version (not upgrade) as a gift. I'm running
Windows 98 right now and want to know if I can save some files & programs or
do I lose everything upon installation. I understand that if this was the
upgrade version I could transfer what I wanted to XP, but what about the full
version?

I would do a Dual Boot if you have room on your hard drive. You can
always remove Win98 after XP is installed. Do a
System Compatibility Check also. Otherwise put the files on a CD if
you have a Burner.

Hi Carib,

Before performing the upgrade to XP, you should run the Upgrade Advisor (if
you haven't done so already) in order to confirm whether XP will have
"issues" with your computer's current hardware and installed software:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx

You can still perform an upgrade install with the Full version of XP. While
currently in 98, insert the XP install CD. It should autorun and bring you
to the initial Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP menu, where you would opt to
Install Windows XP. At the Welcome to Windows Setup window, there is a field
for Installation Type.....choose Upgrade (Recommended) vs. New Installation
(Advanced). Accept the the EULA, and then key in product serial number and
click on Next. Follow further prompts to install XP.

***If you have an "always on" connection to the internet (eg., cable),
before you perform the install, ensure that the modem is unplugged from the
computer, as Blaster or Sasser worm attacks may occur during the network
setup portion of the install. If Service Pack 2 is included in the version
of XP that you are installing, that Service Pack contains the critical
updates that protect against Blaster and Sasser. If Service Pack 2 is NOT
included, before you connect to the internet, enable the Internet Connection
Firewall before connecting:

Once you have the Internet Connection Firewall enabled and have connected to
the internet, either download and install SP2 from Windows Update or, at the
very least, install the separate critical patches:

Blaster

Sasser

If the "full" version is retail - it will do an upgrade, if it is OEM, then
a clean install is the only option.
None the less, it's best to do a clean install anyway, backup your important
data files, format clean, and reinstall - it'll eliminate any of those
tell-tale Win9x Gremlins from within your system.
