format before installing. After install is complete, go to
the windows upgrade and get all the critical and win 2000
updates downloaded and installed. I hope you have a high
speed connection for the updates to be downloaded. They
are quite large.

if you have a bootable 2000 install cd, you can boot directly from it
and delete the existing partitions, format a new one, etc. just be
sure that you back up all your data, have a bootable cd, a bootable
cd-rom drive, and that you have a floppy disk for any hard disk
controller cards you have. xp has drivers (e.g. the promise ata-100
card driver) that aren't included in 2000's driver set. you can't do
it from anything but a floppy, so watch out!
