installing windows 2000 over Windows xp home edition

Hi all,
I purchased a computer that comes with windows xp and would like to install
windows 2000 on it. When I try to run the installation from the windows 2000
cd I get the following message "This CD Rom is from an older version of
Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this
disk will be disabled."
So, I then tried to install it by going to the BIOS and setting it to reboot
from the CD. Still no success.
Do you know what I need to do? I am hoping I won't have to start from
scratch with partitions and everything.

- Is your Win2000 CD an OEM CD or an upgrade CD?
- What exactly do you see when you boot off the Win2000 CD?

Windows XP *IS* a newer version of Windows than 2000. (I believe Win 2K
is actualy NT 5.0, and XP is NT 5.1). Presumably, Microsoft's logic is
"Why would anyone want to DOWNGRADE their OS?"

You're only option to upgrade from XP is to go to Windows 2003. Without
some fancy tricking of the computer (that's beyond my knowledge), you
would have to wipe out XP before you can install 2000.

It is an OEM CD.
When I try to boot off of the Win 2000 installation CD, I get a message that
says to press F1 if I want to retry the boot process or to press F2 to enter
system setup.

It appears that your Win2000 CD is not bootable. This can happen if
- The CD is damaged
- It is an unauthorised copy
- The BIOS is unable to boot from a CD

I recommend that you try some other bootable CD in order to
know the actual cause.

If your current system partition is a FAT32 partition then you can do
this:
- Unhide & save c:\ntldr and c:\ntdetect.com while WinXP is active.
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Run \i386\winnt.exe from your Win2000 CD to install Win2000.
- Launch Win2000.
- Restore ntldr and ntdetect.com

If your current system partitiion is an NTFS partition then things get
a little harder. Post again if this is the case.

I do have an NTFS partition.
But, I am having additional problems. The machine I have does not have a
floppy drive. I have been trying to boot from "bootable" cds. At this point,
I would not mind reformatting and going through the partitioning process. In
fact, a clean install is probably the best thing.

Two recommendations:
- Perform the test I suggested in my first reply: Try to boot
with some other bootable CD (e.g. a Win98 CD).
- Spend a few dollars and get a floppy disk drive. They
cost next to nothing.
