has XP Home Edition on. When get to license agreement and
asked to press F8 to continue -- it hangs!

Is it possible to replace XP Home with W2K?

There is no downgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 2000.
You need to perform a Clean Installation of Windows 2000.
Insert the Windows 2000 CD and follow the prompts to install Windows
2000 on another partition or delete all partitions and then start the
installation.

Greetings --

If you want to "downgrade" WinXP to an earlier OS, you're certainly
entitled to do so, as long as you've purchased a legitimate copy of
that earlier OS. (Although I can't imagine why you'd want to.)

Before proceeding, though, you'd better take a few minutes to see
if there are any device drivers for the older OS available for the new
machine. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed by its
manufacturer for WinXP. Also, check with the PC vendor to determine
whether or not replacing the pre-installed OS will void your warranty
and/or any service agreement(s), as normally the case.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Not as an upgrade install.

Windows 2000 is older than Windows XP and therefore this would be
classed as a downgrade install which is not supported.

Your options would be:

1. Upgrade the XP Home to XP Pro using the Retail Upgrade version of
XP Pro, provided you actually need at least one of the additional
functions and features which are found in only in XP Pro and are not
included with XP Home.

2. Reformat the hard drive and then install Windows 2000 on the empty
drive.

Good luck

And don't expect any support from the manufacturer (either hardware or
software) as a change of OS constitutes an invalidation of the warranty.
