Installing upgrades

Hell
When I`m installing upgrades such as explorer sevice pack 1, i have to be in install mode. How do i do that? Some say when I got to the upgrade page from add/remove programs I`m automatically in install mode but when i start to installl the upgrades it prompts me that im not in install mode
